So, you’re about to embark on one of the most exciting adventures of your life, but before you get to live that dream, you’ve got one big task: packing. I know—it can feel like trying to fit your entire life into a suitcase, but don’t worry, I’ve got your back.

For the next 30 days, I’ll be posting daily tips and tricks to help you prepare for your exchange year. From packing hacks to cultural adaptation tips, this series will cover it all. By the end, you’ll be fully prepped and confident to start your journey. Let’s dive into today’s topic: how to even begin packing for such a big adventure!

The first point is probably easy and that is START EARLY!!! Packing isn’t something you can leave for the night before your flight. Trust me, you’ll forget something important or overpack if you rush. Start at least a month before you leave so you have time to plan, shop for essentials, and refine your packing list. (Which you will hear tomorrow more about)

This second point is probably also very much self explanatory which is RESEARCH YOUR DESTINATION. Research is key! What’s the weather like in your host country? Are you going to need warm coats, or will lightweight clothing be more appropriate? Look up the cultural norms too—some places have stricter dress codes or different ideas of what’s “normal” to wear.

Make a Packing List: This is a game-changer. Write down everything you think you’ll need, then revise it. Cut out the “just in case” items (you can always buy things locally) and focus on essentials like clothing, toiletries, and travel documents.

Check Airline Rules: Every airline has baggage size and weight restrictions. Look them up before you start packing to avoid extra fees or having to unpack your suitcase at the airport.

Focus on Essentials: Start with the basics—passport, visa, travel insurance, and a week’s worth of clothing. Add your chargers, medications, and a small travel-size toiletries kit. You don’t have to pack for the whole year; you can buy most things once you arrive.

This is just the beginning! Tomorrow, I’ll share the ultimate packing list to help you figure out exactly what you need to bring. Get ready to become a packing pro—this adventure is just getting started! 🚀
